Are we then to turn a deaf ear to the screams of fruits and vegetables, plucked and raped at their pinnacle to satisfy our hideous appetites? What of the suffering of our leafy, grainy, seedy bretheren?
I’m on the fence with this horse slaughter hoopla. I’m an animal-loving-meat-eating-business man, so I can comprehend the concerns of all sides. But I too have asked the question many times, why cows and not horses? Where does it end? I need more information but would rather see the energy spent on other issues.

Personally, I don’t care if the French do like Horse Meat. Hell those people eat Neutria! Horses do occupy a special place in the hearts and minds of American’s. Icon’s or pets, the slaughter of Horses must end. There is no net loss, as we already harvest vast amounts of “farm raised especially for slaughter” protein that is every bit as nourishing, (and IMOH) just as tasty. Maybe if cowboys actually rode cows on the trail, or perhaps if there were cow dressage events….

The argument is not which animals should or should not be eaten (though in general, our culture frowns upon consuming any domesticated companion animals).
Rather, the point is democracy: IIRC, about 85% of Americans are opposed to wild horse slaughter. Thus, it is the job of our so-called Representatives to actually “represent” us by outlawing the practice.
Instead, we have the usual paradigm at work: a minority of 15% (usually composed of the ultra-rich or in other cases, religious fanatics) setting policy for the rest of us.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again: if the French like horsemeat so much, let them raise their own.
And if the ranchers here are supporting the slaughter because their lands are overpopulated with mustangs, let’s find some vets willing to do pro-bono work, and geld the stallions. Over the course of time, the population would naturally thin out.
