Yet again, your arguments amount to: "Ewwwww!"

It's not Fido that's getting chopped up for beef in most of those countries, it's dogs that are specially raised and bred for meat... which two of your links explicitly state. It's the same as rabbits -- there are meat rabbits, and there are pet rabbits, and there are show rabbits. There are different breeds meant for each, they're raised and fed differently, and they end up in different ways. We already do eat 'fluffy' in this country. Heck, with Chicken and other poultry, there isn't even a distinction between different breeds for different purposes; we use the meat and eggs of both, and also make them our pets.

Unless you advocate the complete and total expulsion of meat from our diets (which I'll take as an argument, but which is completely out of the context of this discussion...), there's absolutely no reason why horse meat isn't a valid source of meat in this country. Heck, I would put a horseburger on the grill -- IF I could legally slaughter and consume the meat.

My favorite quote out of the whole thing so far was the senator who said something along the lines of "In old westerns, you never see the cowboy kill and eat his own horse..." ... I'm not sure which westerns he was watching, but as a kid, I specifically remember this happening twice. (Unfortunately, my google-foo is weak, and I can't turn up the name of the movie. One was a Clint Eastwood, but he made like 300,000 westerns.) And it used to happen all the time.

Meat is meat, nothing more, nothing less. It's eaten all over the world. There's nothing wrong with it's source, whether it be a cow or a cat. Any revulsion you may feel is in your own mind. you can't just eat the ugly ones.

Hello Karl,
Yes, I am aware of the fact that other countries consider horse meat a supreme delicacy. Are you aware that other countries also have a fondness for dog and cat meat? While I get your standpoint of typical modern day America I just can't foresee you comparing a Superbowl halftime incident to the welfare of animals! I really do think that our main concern is the horses being slaughtered in our own backyard. Yes, while we do live in a meat loving society ourselves we don't even consider throwing out some horseburgers on the grill. It's just WRONG. Since we DO live in Texas (home of the Cowboy) it's even more of a concern than elsewhere I assume. We think of them as companions just like our own cats, dogs, etc. Nonetheless, my point is we shouldn't be killing horses to feed other people in foreign lands or here for animal food!!! I mentioned already about the consumption of canines so would you want a slaughter plant for Fido in your homestate or country?? I sure as hell wouldn't! It made me sick just to get these links I am providing below..It's pretty much the same reasoning you are giving me. I really am hoping you might reconsider once you give this post a once over but if not we are all intitled to our opinion. It's a free country so EVERYONE that is listening don't give up the fight!!

Megan, did you know that we're nearly the only place in the world that doesn't eat horse meat? There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. Europeans, Africans, Asians (including Russians), South Americans -- all eat horse meat. In fact, in Italy, horse sausage is considered superior to beef or pork sausage. [1] It's really only Brits, Aussies and us 'Merricuns that won't eat Trigger.[2]

If you're as liberal and animal-friendly as you seem, you probably rail at the "puritain" values of our country. Our concern with nipple slips at the superbowl, our desire to expunge Evolution from our school's cirriculum, Texans' obsession with how many sex toys you own...[3] Not eating horse meat is one of those puritain values. "Despite our [cowboy] reputation, it turns out we are actually a nation that thinks like a 14-year-old girl." [4]
