Rob HinojosaPeople from small towns usually do one of two things, stay there or move away. I grew up in Falfurrias, a South Texas town population 6,201 last time I checked. Not by choice but rather by destiny, when my parents separated, my mother, brother and I moved to Corpus Christi while my father stayed in Fal where my brother would soon join him. I did my time at Flour Bluff High School in a beach suburb of Corpus until 1999 when I decided to move to San Antonio to go to the only college I applied for, UTSA. I was on a full ride academic scholarship, but unfortunately my excitement about and irresponsibilities with my newly found freedom away from home got the best of me, and the worst.

I started as a mechanical engineering student and got through about 75 hours of basics and course work and decided it wasn’t for me. I switched to small business management to fill my desires of owning a few businesses. The theory side of business while very important, didn’t make me tic. I found myself with over 150 attempted hours and nothing to show for it. I made my way into the art department, and have made the Dean’s List every semester since. I don’t ever plan on becoming a practicing artist, but rather I realize the importance of the creative industry. That’s what drives most ventures, creativity then execution and well, money. I’d say a math background, a digital imaging and web design background, an art background and few marketing classes here and there make a great combination. I enjoy being around creative people who by nature, always question the status quo. I’ll graduate (fingers crossed) in May 2007, and then the fun will really begin. (By fun I mean paying back student loans that were really not necessary had I not goofed off my first four years…lessoned learned.)

In addition to working in furniture sales, I’ve started a few businesses, one of which I’m still currently operating. I started off making metal wall sculptures out of aluminum and stainless steel and selling them on Ebay. Then I started a small lawn business, and now I have a small drapery and hardware installation business. Do you also notice a pattern of not being able to decide in the present, what I want to do in the future? I’ve always said I have a problem deciding now what I want to do later. Is that a quality of a successful person? Hmmm. I’d like to think of it as selective A.D.D.

I got interested in politics after 9/11 and haven’t stopped listening to talk radio ever since. I became active in politics only after I signed up at KinkyFriedman.com. Because of Kinky, I will be active in politics for the rest of my life. He made me realize that we really can make a difference. With no experience what so ever, I helped organize the Jesse Ventura and Kinky Friedman Rally at UTSA where over a 1000 people showed up. We should’ve gotten a bigger venue. I’ve authored about 75-100 articles at Texas Gone Kinky and GetKinky.org, a couple of which were featured on KinkyFriedman.com. (1,2 wrote some) I’ve edited a few videos that have been watched over 15,000 times, and some have been featured on KF.com. (1,2,3) I am a socially liberal, fiscally conservative Texan. Who isn’t?

I am learning more and more about politics everyday, and I am always open to advice, suggestions, constructive criticism, and reality checks. This is a learning process.
